After the rain, there will be rainbow

Joanna and her husband, Dr. Albert Chan, were both devoted Christians. She first heard the Gospel message on May 5, 1995, and accepted Christ into her heart as her Lord and Savior. Soon, she was involved in a church, attending Bible study, cell group meetings, fellowship with new converts, church camps and special functions. Later, she would meet Albert and fall in love with him.

As doctors, both Albert and Joanna maintained busy schedules even while they were courting each other. Often, their "dates" comprised a quick meal in a noisy and crowded restaurant as there was never space in their work schedules to spend a quiet evening together.

Not long after they met, their relationship was tested. Albert was diagnosed with leukemia. It was a shock to Joanna, but she was determined to continue her relationship with the man she loved and be strong. Members of Albert's church, The Praise Assembly, rallied round them, showing warm support by praying and interceding for his healing. Albert eventually recovered, following a bone marrow transplant from a donor.

In December, 2000, they were married in The Praise Assembly Church and the happy couple chose "A Covenant Under The Rainbow" as their signature wedding song. It speaks of God's covenant of love to those who believe in Him, but for Joanna and Albert, the words sealed their vow of everlasting love for each other. They strongly believed that there will always be a pretty rainbow after the rain.

"My lonely heart has finally stopped crying and I eagerly look forward to seeing the pretty rainbow after the rain, which is a sign of Your covenant with me. My restless feet can finally stop and rest. God has prepared a banquet of abundance for me. I have entered an everlasting covenant with You, Lord, and the rainbow is a sign of that covenant. I will praise you, Lord, all my life and rejoice in Your love always. All things sing the praises of your mercy and the land recounts your gracious blessings."

Mr. Luk Kam Chung, who presided at their wedding, spoke of how two people in Christ can become one flesh, and go towards the same direction in the path of life when they are willing to submit themselves to God. Joanna began attending The Praise Assembly and was later baptized.

Albert was always optimistic and on fire for Jesus Christ. Soon after the wedding, Joanna went to the UK for further studies. Sadly, Albert's leukemia returned. Beset with worry for her husband, Joanna returned to Hong Kong to care for him. Even when he was so ill Albert's heart was for those who needed help. Sometimes he took days off from the hospital to attend prayer meetings in his church. He was himself in such need of prayer but he still insisted on praying for other people!

In mid 2002, Dr. Albert Chan passed away. His last words to his dear wife were, "Good-bye Joanna, somewhere we will meet again!" Just a "good-bye," not a "farewell"! Though grieved at losing her husband, Joanna had the assurance that she would one day be reunited with Albert in heaven. She penned a touching farewell to her husband: "The covenant of our never-ending love that we made under the rainbow will never change.
Rest in the Lord, I wait to be with you again in the clouds up above."

She did not have long to wait "to be with him again in the clouds above". In May, 2003, Dr. Joanna Tse died after a month-long battle with atypical pneumonia or SARS. She was infected by SARS from the patient she was treating at the hospital. She was only 35, and had been a widow for  only about a year.

Although life has not dealt them a kind hand, this exceptional couple was willing to stay on the course they had chosen as doctors. A loyal and loving wife, Joanna never considered her husband her patient, but as a great partner worthy of her commitment to him. As a doctor in a government hospital, she may not be highly paid, but Joanna's heart has always been to pour out her love and care for her patients. This she did with a passion, and for her it was worth every moment.

Joanna and Albert were Soldiers of Christ who pressed on without flinching, despite Life's battles. Not only have they vowed to love each other "until death us do part", but they have also made a commitment to love and follow God, no matter what. The rainbow is the sign of this covenant. They both valiantly "fought the good fight of faith" and did not waver even right up to the end.

And their wedding song -- "A Covenant under the Rainbow" -- which was once their vow of love, has become a memorial love song, not just at Albert's funeral, but for both of them today. In death they have been reunited in heaven, where there are no more tears or sorrow. They have found their "rainbow" in the sky!
